Cluster Connect

Cluster Connect was developed to empower Toronto’s Health Science Cluster discover and connect with their next partner, client or collaborator. The product leverage multiple data sources and to connect the clusters Academic Institutions, Businesses, Associations, Funders, Incubators, Accelerators and facilities.

The Opportunity

TO Health! was founded by the Toronto Region Board of Trade and supported by private and public stakeholders to convene and profile the Toronto Region Health Cluster globally. While developing the strategic cluster action plan, it became clear that an integrated cluster inventory was needed to be used as a common resource by our stakeholders internally and groups externally as a ‘window’ into the Toronto region HHS cluster.

You X Ventures was privileged to participate in the early stages of the development of the cluster action plan. Following the approved recommendations, we led the end to end product development process to productize a solution against those cluster requirements. Our entire team was thrilled to be a part of a project with the potential to support and connect so many of Toronto’s inspiring health science institutions and companies.

The product optimizes company data from Biotechgate, Clearbit, and LinkedIn for reliable results.

Our Approach

When approaching a project with so many stakeholders, we wanted to ensure to involve the cluster in translating their needs into more concrete product requirements. We worked with TO Health to setup a day at MaRS Discovery District where we facilitated two different collaborative research sessions with 40 stakeholders from different domains of the cluster. This results of this research helped to inform the specific features and principles of the solution.

Following an iterative cycle of wireframing, we recognized the need to establish a brand for the product itself so that it could stand on its own as a solution and not be confused with the brand of either TO Health or the Cluster itself. We designed a visual identity system to distinguish all three brands, but align them as well and with that brand guide in place, advanced through the UI Design, backend and frontend development of the platform.

Project Status

Cluster Connect BETA has launched during Health Innovation Week 2019 here in Toronto. Following a fixed amount of time of gathering feedback, the product will undergo a final round of changes which will include some additional features for individuals to connect directly, before being promoted more broadly within Toronto, Canada and Globally.
